Section/Topic
Continue in another surface (Desktop application page)
Current Documentation
The docs currently say:
"The Continue in menu, accessible from the VS Code icon in the bottom right of the session toolbar, lets you move your session to another surface"
The cloud page also points to that menu: https://code.claude.com/docs/en/claude-code-on-the-web ("The Desktop app provides a Continue in menu that can send a local session to the cloud").
What's Wrong or Missing?
- It assumes the user has VS Code. Claude Desktop is not a VS Code product, and many Desktop users have no VS Code installed. The editor button appears to have shown only for users with a supported editor installed, so the docs give users without VS Code no way to reach the Continue in menu.
- The icon no longer exists for anyone. The bottom-right VS Code button was removed in the April 14, 2026 Desktop redesign (reported in #48480, closed as not planned by the stale bot with no reply). On current Desktop (macOS, October 2026) the bottom of a local Code-tab session shows only the + button, mic, permission mode, model and effort; the top bar shows the repo, branch, diff count, Create PR and close. There is no editor icon and no visible Continue in menu.
- Nothing in the docs says where Continue in -> Claude Code on the Web lives now, or whether it still exists. Users who want to move a local session to the cloud (for example when their weekly plan limit is used up but they have cloud session credits left) cannot find it.
Suggested Improvement
- Say where Continue in is in the current Desktop UI, describing the control by its own label, not by a third-party app's logo.
- If moving a local session to the cloud is no longer available in Desktop, say so on both pages and point to the alternative (claude --cloud starts a new session without the conversation).
- Remove the reference to the VS Code icon.
Impact
High - Prevents users from using a feature
Additional Context
Related: #48480 (VS Code button removed from the bottom bar after the redesign) and #96155 (move-to-cloud failing in Desktop, which shows the feature existed for some users after the redesign).
