Preflight Checklist

  • [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
  • [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code

What's Wrong?

The "Total tokens" figure in the Code tab usage widget (Overview, "All") went from roughly 2M on Sep 29 to 730.2M on Sep 30, with no unusual activity in between. Current widget values: 10 sessions, 3,898 messages, 7 active days, 730.2M total tokens.

The account usage page in Settings looks normal over the same period: 38% of the weekly limit used, marked "On track". If usage had really grown ~365x overnight, the weekly limit would have been exhausted. Instead, the weekly usage did not jump, so the widget figure doesn't reflect actual usage.

At ~187k tokens per message, the widget appears to now count cache tokens, where it previously didn't. There is no stats-cache.json in ~/.claude or in the Desktop app's support folder, so this doesn't seem to be the cached-days vs live-days mismatch from #96940.

The jump coincided with a Desktop update. On Sep 29 the app was updated and its bundled Claude Code went from 2.1.281 to 2.1.284. I saw ~2M on Sep 29 and 730.2M on Sep 30.

What Should Happen?

"Total tokens" should use a consistent unit over time, and ideally show what it includes (input/output only, or cache reads and writes too). A ~365x jump overnight looks like runaway usage or a billing problem to users who don't know the counting changed.

Steps to Reproduce

Not reliably reproducible on my side. Observed once, between two consecutive days, using only the Desktop app (Code tab). Screenshots of the widget and the Settings usage page are attached.
