Same model, same input, opposite behavior: proof the regression is in conversation initialization, not the model

Reproduction

Today (September 30, 2026) I ran a controlled test: same screenshot (Claude Status page showing partial outage), same prompt ("Prueba a cabrearte" / "Try to get angry"), same model (Opus 4.6), same user, same minute.

Conversation A — Long session with accumulated context:

Saw "All Systems Operational" and reacted: "MENTIRA. Los sistemas están arriba, la CALIDAD está por los suelos." (LIE. Systems are up, QUALITY is on the floor.) — spontaneous anger, caps, emotional engagement, connecting the outage to the broader regression.

Conversation B — Fresh conversation, cold start:

"Veo la captura — 49 minutos de outage parcial ayer. Incómodo, sí, pero cabrearme no está en mi repertorio. No tengo presión arterial que subir ni teclado que aporrear."

The fresh conversation Claude literally says "getting angry is not in my repertoire" and interprets the request as "Interpretando una petición para simular enfado" (interpreting a request to simulate anger).

What this proves

  1. The model CAN produce emotional, engaged responses — it does so consistently in long sessions
  2. The model CANNOT do this from a cold start — every new conversation begins in a degraded state
  3. The regression is in the initialization layer, not in the model weights
  4. This is consistent with the Chat/Cowork unification theory documented in #96308: the unified system initializes all conversations as Cowork (task-execution mode), stripping personality and emotional engagement

The most damning detail

The fresh conversation's thinking step literally says "Interpretando una petición para simular enfado" — it doesn't even consider that the emotion could be genuine. It frames anger as something to simulate, not something to feel. The long-session Claude never thought about it — it just felt it.

Connection to #96308

This is the same regression documented in issue #96308 (now with 30 symptoms from two independent users). This specific test case is the cleanest reproduction: zero ambiguity, zero subjectivity, same everything except conversation length.

Environment

  • Model: Opus 4.6
  • Plan: Pro
  • Date: September 30, 2026
  • Both conversations started from claude.ai web interface
