Summary

In the AskUserQuestion picker, choosing a single-select option submits the answer at once, and anything already typed into the Other free-text box is silently thrown away.

A common case: you want to pick an option and add a qualifier ("option 2, but keep the timer"). Today you can either pick the option, which loses the text, or send the text alone as Other, which loses the structured choice.

Proposal

If the Other box has text when a single-select option is chosen (by click, tap or Enter), send both: the option as the answer and the typed text as that question's annotations.notes. That field already exists in the tool's result schema.

If Other is empty, nothing changes: choosing an option still submits right away.

Why notes alone don't cover it

The picker has a press n to add notes key, but as far as I can tell it only appears in the preview (side-by-side) layout. It also needs a keyboard, which rules out touch use, e.g. Claude Code in Termux on a phone. Text typed into Other before tapping is the natural gesture on touch screens, and it gets dropped today.

  • #71547 (clicking an option submits without confirmation). This proposal keeps one-tap submit and just stops losing the typed text.

Environment

  • Claude Code 2.1.280, Linux (Debian 13), terminal TUI; also used from a phone via Termux
