Problem Statement

Summary

In the VS Code extension, the only ways to rewind the conversation to an earlier message are "Fork conversation from here" and "Fork conversation and rewind code". Both create a new conversation branch. There is no option to roll back the current conversation in place.

Current behavior

Hovering over a previous message shows:

  • Fork conversation from here
  • Rewind code to here
  • Fork conversation and rewind code

To discard the last few exchanges, I have to fork. That leaves two conversations in history when I only wanted one.

Use case

I often want to throw away one bad or irrelevant exchange (for example, a question I sent by mistake) without creating a separate conversation or losing my place in the session.

Proposed Solution

Expected behavior

Let the user choose between:

  • Rewind conversation to here (in place): truncate the current conversation at this message and keep working in the same session. The CLI's /rewind → "Conversation only" already works this way.
  • Fork conversation from here: the existing behavior.

Other assistants, such as GitHub Copilot Chat, offer both options.
