Preflight Checklist

What's Wrong?

Environment: Claude desktop app for Windows (MSIX) 2.2553.1, also seen on 2.110.1 and 1.49585.0; Windows 11 x64; Cowork sessions linked to this computer (cloud-mirrored), with a local project folder connected. Related: #95365, #86337, #72439, and #84550 (macOS, file cards fail to open; this report is the Windows / cloud-mirrored Cowork case, where the card only previews).

When Claude delivers a file in a Cowork session (a SendUserFile card, or a file written to the outputs folder), clicking the card opens a preview in the right-hand side panel and nothing else. Clicking the title or the text in that preview does nothing. There is no "Open", "Open with default app" or "Show in folder" action on the card or in the preview. computer:// links in the reply do not open the file either.

This looks like a missing control rather than a missing capability, because the app already puts the file on my disk: main.log shows autoSaveDeliveredFiles followed by auto-save: 1 saved (see logs below) and the file appears in <connected project folder>\Claude outputs\. Files Claude writes with device_commit_files are also already in the connected folder. The card simply offers no way to open that local copy.

Secondary observation: the auto-save is not reliable as a fallback. On 20 Sep 2026 two cards sent at 09:37 and 09:41 local time had produced no autoSaveDeliveredFiles call ten minutes later, while the session was in active use; other sessions the previous evening auto-saved within seconds.

What Should Happen?

One click on the file card (or on the title in the preview) opens the document in its Windows default application (Word, PowerPoint, the PDF reader), as it did for me until early September 2026.

Requested:

  1. An "Open" (OS default application) and a "Show in folder" action on every file card and in the file-preview header, for files that were auto-saved or committed to a connected folder.
  2. Clicking the title in the preview opens the local copy.
  3. Run the auto-save when the file is delivered, not only when the desktop window renders the message.

Error Messages/Logs

No error is shown or logged on click. main.log, for delivered cards (the file is already on disk):
2026-09-19 23:35:40 [info] LocalAgentModeSessions.autoSaveDeliveredFiles: cse_... [4]
2026-09-19 23:35:43 [info] [remote-file] auto-save: 4 saved, 0 present, 0 failed
2026-09-20 09:25:55 [info] LocalAgentModeSessions.autoSaveDeliveredFiles: cse_... [1]
2026-09-20 09:25:56 [info] [remote-file] auto-save: 1 saved, 0 present, 0 failed

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Windows desktop app 2.2553.1, open a Cowork session with a local folder connected (session linked to this computer).
  2. Ask Claude to create any .docx or .pdf and deliver it.
  3. Click the file card in the chat. A preview opens in the side panel.
  4. Click the file name or the content in the preview; right-click the card. Nothing opens the file in its application, and there is no Open / Show in folder control.

Yes, this worked in a previous version

Additional Information

Impact and the workaround I had to build. I am a clinician and academic, not a developer, running about 55 Cowork projects, and I open dozens of delivered documents a day; hunting for each one in Explorer is a real productivity cost. Between 11 and 20 September 2026 I went through six workarounds with Claude: computer:// links; a custom URL scheme registered in HKCU (works from Windows, not from the chat); having Claude open every file on my screen with Invoke-Item through a local MCP server; a PowerShell watcher that auto-opened everything arriving in an inbox folder; and finally what I use now: an always-on-top PowerShell/WinForms window, started at logon, that runs a FileSystemWatcher over my whole projects tree (and every Claude outputs folder) and lists each new or changed file so that one click opens it with Invoke-Item. I also had to inject a standing "file delivery" instruction into the project instructions of 47 projects and maintain a custom skill, only to compensate for a missing "Open" button.

This report was prepared with Claude's help from the logs on my machine.
