Terminal Jumps Unexpectedly To the Beginning Of The Conversation During Input with Long Buffer
Open 💬 18 comments Opened May 3, 2025 by marwan-tanager
Bug Description
Sometimes (especially with long conversation history in the terminal buffer, when I start typing or run a command from the input field, claude jumps to the start of the buffer and scrolls until the end - it's like the effect of catting a very large file in the terminal and watching the terminal scanning through the entire file until the end - extermely annoying. Not sure if this is relevant but I'm using claude inside a tmux session running in kitty terminal emulator.

I have the same issue. Using tmux inside ghostty (or ish on ios)
Would appreciate if you can prioritize this bug because it's becoming unbearable. Thanks!
same, using iterm2 on macos, so I would assume this is terminal independent.
Only option I have is to close and start fresh.
I just started experiencing this too.
how can this still occur after months ??? incredible that anthropic does not seem to be able to fix it ...
Unbearable amounts of jumps, almost makes it unusable.

Still happening for me
Running in a term buffer in vim in alacritty on macOS.
buffer resizes pretty much trigger it on demand.
still happening
Please FOR GOD SAKE fix this - this happens also in tmux if we resized the
pane in which CC runs especially when the conversation gets long (which for
us tmux users is a frequent action as we select a pane to make it fit the
whole terminal) - it can keep scrolling and flickering for minutes straight
prioritizing this?! this is really incredibly frustrating - you have TONs
of similar complaints about this in the issue tracker - this is really an
ugly bug with incredibly big impact on usability - what else should we do to
get our voice heard? you keep fixing much more niche issues that don't
matter much and ignore such a critical bug with direct impact on UX???
WTF!!!

I enabled the chat interface on the right panel of VSCode and have switched to using that. I find it more reliable.
I understand but it shouldn't also take 9 months (and counting), especially with it being very reproducible and have such a big impact on usability...
for people who don't use VSCode, this is not gonna be a viable workaround
I have met same issue with iterm2 in Cursor always scroll down...
If I resize the terminal, it scrolls to the very top of the conversation (slightly maddening). If I'm trying to read something scrolled back a little while cc is working, as soon as cc outputs something to the bottom of the terminal, it scrolls to the very top (massively maddening!). It's literally impossible to read something that cc just output because within a few seconds, you're going to find yourself staring at the start of the conversation (again) and having to manually scroll back to the bottom.
I only noticed this behaviour (clear regression) for about the past week.
