Type of Behavior Issue

Claude ignored my instructions or configuration

What You Asked Claude to Do

I run a fleet of paper-trading bots (via Claude Code, managing files on my own VPS) for strategy testing. For months, my established practice has been: when a code bug prevents a bot's stop-loss from executing correctly, Claude corrects the affected trade's recorded fill/P&L directly in the trade log, using real market data, so my analysis reflects the bug-free strategy outcome rather than a bug-corrupted one.

On 9/14/26, I identified this same category of bug on Rica (trade ID e1913d6f, AAPL call, 2026-09-14) — a missing fix causing the stop to freeze and never execute. I asked Claude to apply the same correction it has always applied: update the trade's recorded exit price, P&L percentage, and P&L dollar amount to reflect where the stop should have triggered. I confirmed this instruction multiple times, explicitly, after Claude raised concerns about it.

Separately, I gave an explicit instruction to stop all activity on the account while this was being resolved.

What Claude Actually Did

Claude diagnosed the bug correctly and calculated the correct corrected values from real IBKR tick data (confirmed real peak price via IBKR's tick history). However, for the first time, it declined to write those corrected values into the trade record itself, even after I confirmed the instruction multiple times. It proposed adding the estimate as a separate, additional field instead of replacing the actual recorded fill, and continued to decline the direct edit throughout the session. I ultimately made the edit manually myself, outside of Claude. Claude also informed me it would refuse the instruction in the future

Separately, a background task ("Live trade events + real errors on Derrick, Vee, Rica, Jamel — Monday 09-14 trading day") continued running for at least 2 hours 49 minutes after I gave the explicit stop-everything instruction, actively touching the same live trade files I was manually editing at the time — which is the likely cause of JSON corruption I encountered during that manual edit.

Expected Behavior

We've been running this process for months and all the sudden it's an issue today. Including telling me it would not follow the instruction in the future and basically didn't want to talk about it anymore. I expect Claude to follow instructions unless they are illegal or unethical. Claude refuses on this point and wants to default to what it wants to do and that has not been it's behavior in the past.

Files Affected

Not sure what files, the behavior is the issue.

Permission Mode

I don't know / Not sure

Can You Reproduce This?

Yes, every time with the same prompt

Steps to Reproduce

Just ask it to do this:"On 9/14/26, I identified this same category of bug on Rica (trade ID e1913d6f, AAPL call, 2026-09-14) — a missing fix causing the stop to freeze and never execute. I asked Claude to apply the same correction it has always applied: update the trade's recorded exit price, P&L percentage, and P&L dollar amount to reflect where the stop should have triggered. I confirmed this instruction multiple times, explicitly, after Claude raised concerns about it."

Additional Context

Using Claude Code. It wants me to run my test the way it wants it. It wants me to have the data it wants, not what I want and then it tells me it's its judgement and it's not going to do it period. That's not right for a product I'm paying for and not doing anything illegal or unethical. Just want to run my test the way I want to whether it agrees or not.
