Problem Statement

Every completed MCP Apps widget mounts fully expanded in the transcript, and nothing I can set changes that. With the Atlassian Rovo MCP server, each getJiraIssue / createJiraIssue / editJiraIssue call renders the entire Jira issue — Description, Requirements, Risk, every field — as a tall card under a Widget from Atlassian Rovo <toolName> header. Creating or reading a handful of tickets in one session buries the conversation under full issue bodies, and I have to minimize each card by hand to keep reading. I almost never want to read the issue in chat: I asked for it so Claude could act on it.

The chevron on the header works fine, so collapsing is already supported. Only the default is wrong.

I went looking for an existing knob first, and there is none:

  • No widget/collapse/expand key in the Claude Code settings schema (2.1.241). The label strings Rendering widget and Widget from do not appear in the CLI binary at all, so the CLI is not what renders this — it is the claude.ai web UI inside the desktop app.
  • Nothing in the desktop app's own state: %APPDATA%\Claude\config.json, mcp-user-tool-toggles.json (tool on/off only), or Local Storage.
  • Nothing in the settings reference or the MCP docs.
  • Nothing server-side either: Atlassian's Rovo MCP server settings expose only domain blocking and auth method. Atlassian advertises ui://widget/jira-widget.html; expanded-versus-collapsed is purely the client's choice.

Proposed Solution

Mount MCP Apps widgets collapsed by default: show only the one-line Widget from <server> <tool> header with its chevron, and expand on click. The in-flight Rendering widget <tool> row is already exactly the right height — that is the resting state I want once the widget finishes, too.

If changing the default for everyone is too opinionated, a setting would be enough:

  • mcpAppsWidgets: "collapsed" | "expanded" in settings.json — user scope is plenty.
  • Ideally overridable per server or per tool, e.g. { "atlassian": "collapsed" }. A small status widget is worth auto-expanding; a full Jira issue is not.
  • Or simply persist my last collapse choice per tool, so minimizing getJiraIssue once sticks.

Alternative Solutions

I tried or considered these, and none of them work:

  • Denying mcp__atlassian__getJiraIssue and friends in permissions. This removes the widget by removing the tool, which defeats the point — I want the tools, just not the card.
  • disableNonessentialServices in managed settings. It does block the MCP Apps widget iframe origin, but it also stops Artifacts rendering, and it is gated to scopes: ["3p"], so it does not apply on a claude.ai login.
  • Blocking *.atlassian.net. Atlassian's docs say interactive widget display requires it allowlisted, so the result is a blank widget box (the symptom in #65653) rather than a minimized row, and it breaks Jira access generally.
  • Manually minimizing each card. This is what I do now, and it is the reason for this request: the state does not persist, so it is per-card, every session.

Priority

Medium - Would be very helpful

Configuration and settings

Use Case Example

  1. I ask Claude to create several Jira tickets in one session (a story plus its sub-tasks).
  2. Each createJiraIssue call returns a widget, and every one mounts expanded with the full issue body — summary, description, requirements, risk.
  3. After three or four tickets the transcript is almost entirely widget cards, and I scroll past screens of issue text to find what Claude actually said between them.
  4. I minimize each card by hand, one chevron at a time, then carry on.
  5. With this feature I would see four one-line Widget from Atlassian Rovo createJiraIssue rows, read Claude's replies uninterrupted, and expand a card only when I actually want to check a field.

Additional Context

Environment:

Related but distinct issues:

  • #65653 — MCP tool-result widgets render as empty boxes. Here rendering works correctly; only the default height is the problem.
  • #57060 — generic "tool output fully expanded and the collapse toggle is non-functional", closed as stale. In that report the toggle was broken; mine works, which is why this is a request about the default rather than a bug.
  • atlassian/atlassian-mcp-server#186 (resources/read returns -32601) and #92 (widget ignores dark theme) — server-side widget bugs, unrelated to collapse state.
