Preflight Checklist

What's Wrong?

The "Next Sidebar Tab" and "Previous Sidebar Tab" items in the View menu of Claude for Mac do nothing when invoked by a keyboard shortcut assigned through System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → App Shortcuts. Selecting the same two items with the mouse works correctly.

This reproduces with every key combination I have tried, so it is not a conflict with one particular key.

macOS is dispatching the shortcut correctly. If the View menu is open when I press the shortcut, the menu item visibly flashes to acknowledge the match — AppKit only highlights an item once it has resolved the key equivalent and is sending the action to the item's target. So the shortcut is being found and the item is being triggered, yet nothing happens in the app. Because mouse selection of the same item works, the action itself is wired up; something about the keyboard invocation path specifically drops it.

Related observation: I first assigned ⌃⇥ to "Next Sidebar Tab" and ⌃⇧⇥ to "Previous Sidebar Tab". Both render correctly in the View menu, but pressing ⌃⇥ moves to the next chat in the sidebar chat list rather than changing the sidebar tab. That looks like a separate binding occupying the same keys — the plain no-op described above also occurs on combinations with no other binding.

Net effect: these two menu items cannot be driven from the keyboard at all.

Environment

  • Claude for Mac 1.40609.0 (f65e38), built Aug 27 2026
  • macOS 26.6.2 (Tahoe)
  • MacBook Air 13-inch, M3, 2024

What Should Happen?

Pressing the assigned shortcut activates the menu item and changes the sidebar tab — the same result as selecting that item with the mouse.

Error Messages/Logs

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Open System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → App Shortcuts
  2. Add a shortcut for Claude.app with the menu title Next Sidebar Tab, using an otherwise unused combination (e.g. ⌃⌥⌘N)
  3. Add a shortcut for Claude.app with the menu title Previous Sidebar Tab (e.g. ⌃⌥⌘P)
  4. Restart Claude
  5. Open the View menu and confirm both custom shortcuts are displayed beside the items
  6. With the menu still open, press the shortcut — the menu item flashes to acknowledge it
  7. Close the menu and press the shortcut again — nothing happens
  8. Select the same menu item with the mouse — the sidebar tab changes as expected

Note: this reproduces with every combination I have tried, including ones with no other binding in the app or the system.
