I'm blind and use VoiceOver. Screen reader mode is on via axScreenReader: true in settings, and the session confirms it with the "Screen Reader Mode: on" line at startup.

Even with the mode on, VoiceOver sometimes hits a long run of U+2500 and reads "box drawing light horizontal" over and over. I don't have the exact context captured, but it happened recently and more than once.

To narrow it down, these surfaces were tested on v2.1.251 (macOS 26, Terminal.app, tmux capture scanned for U+2500 through U+257F) and came back clean: markdown tables in replies (they render as "Header: value" sentences, as documented), horizontal rules (literal ---), headings, code blocks, bulleted lists, Bash tool output, Edit tool diffs ("Added 1 line, removed 1 line"), Write tool output, numbered menus, and the folder trust prompt.

So whatever still emits those characters is some other surface, or something fixed between the version I heard it on and 2.1.251. Which parts of the interface can still draw rule lines in screen reader mode? A run of box characters costs a VoiceOver user a minute of listening, so I'd love to see the last of them stripped.

Setup: macOS 26 (Darwin 25.6.0), Terminal.app, VoiceOver, Claude Code v2.1.251, axScreenReader: true.
