[BUG] Cannot update payment method — "connection to link account has been closed"; support (Fin) reports account as Free while plan is Max 5x

Preflight Checklist

  • [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
  • [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code

What's Wrong?

Every attempt to update my payment method or change my plan at claude.ai fails
with "connection to link account has been closed". This persists across browsers,
after clearing cache and cookies, with extensions and VPN disabled, logged out
and back in, with multiple cards and with Google Pay.

Separately, Anthropic support (Fin AI Agent) reports my account
(abercrombie.raymond@gmail.com) as being on the Free plan. My account is Max 5x
and is being charged. The Claude Desktop usage panel correctly shows
"Plan usage limits — Max (5x)", and the claude CLI header prints Claude Max.

Issue #57594 documents that Fin queries the Claude Console / API organization
rather than the claude.ai consumer subscription organization; the API org has no
billing configured, so the agent concludes no billing exists and closes the
request. That matches my case exactly.

Eleven support conversations over one week. Every escalation request to a human
has been auto-closed by Fin. No human response.

What Should Happen?

The payment method / plan management flow should complete successfully on an
active Max 5x subscription, and support tooling should resolve the account
against the claude.ai consumer subscription org, not the empty API org.

Error Messages/Logs

connection to link account has been closed

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Sign in to claude.ai on an active Max 5x subscription
  2. Settings -> Billing -> attempt to update payment method or change plan
  3. Enter any valid card, or select Google Pay
  4. Error: "connection to link account has been closed"
  5. Repeat in a different browser, with cache/cookies cleared, extensions and VPN

disabled, logged out and back in, with a different card -> same error

  1. Contact support -> Fin AI Agent reports the account is on the Free plan
  2. Request human escalation -> conversation auto-closed. Repeat x11 over 7 days.

Related billing/support-routing datapoint from a separate account, kept public-safe.

This matches the same failure class I am trying to get routed to the correct Anthropic owner: paid/billing state, payment-method operations, entitlement state, and Fin/support account lookup appear to disagree.

In my case, manual prepaid/discounted usage-credit purchases fail or fail at confirmation while automatic reload billing can still charge from saved payment methods. Support routing has not produced a human Billing Platform / payment-operations owner, and the public evidence cluster now includes several reports where a paid Claude state is visible in one surface while another Anthropic surface or Fin lookup treats the account as Free / not billable / not eligible.

For this issue, the actionable owner request seems to be: please have Anthropic correlate the claude.ai consumer subscription org, API/Console org, payment-method Link/session lifecycle, entitlement cache, support account lookup target, and billing ledger events. A support bot that looks at the wrong org can confidently close the wrong case.

Sanitized public incident packet for the related cluster:

I am intentionally not posting card details, bank names, private payment IDs, raw logs, screenshots, support-thread bodies, or anyone else's private identifiers here.

Same "Link connection closed" error here, also blocked from upgrading Max 5x → Max 20x on the web. Every attempt fails with "The connection to the user's Link account has been closed." The payment never reaches my bank — it fails at Anthropic's checkout, not at the card.

Troubleshooting already completed, same result every time:

Entered the card manually / bypassed Stripe Link
Incognito + multiple browsers
Multiple devices
Retried across several days at different times
A valid card is on file and other charges on it succeed, so this is not a card decline. I opened a support ticket and explicitly requested a human agent — I was told one would be connected "right away," then dropped into a queue with no response for [X] days. This is time-sensitive on my end.

Support conversation ID: 215475281696748

Requesting that someone review my Stripe customer record / Link association and clear the stuck checkout state. Happy to provide anything needed. Thanks.
