[Bug] Anthropic API Error: Fable 5 Safeguards False Positive on Academic Humanities Content
Bug Description
Request ID: req_011CcuTxVVyEP5pmVttYBoBC
False positive from Fable 5 safeguards during literary editing. The flagged message attached a Markdown essay (one chapter of a book on the anthropology of ethics) and asked for a prose-style pass — identifying and removing AI-sounding phrasing. That is the entire task; the same treatment had just been applied to two sibling chapters in the same session without incident.
The essay summarises mainstream, fully cited scholarship on the evolutionary origins of morality: Christopher Boehm's Hierarchy in the Forest (forager bands sanctioning bullies, up to last-resort removal), Fehr & Gächter on altruistic punishment (Nature, 2002), Sosis on commune longevity, Xygalatas on painful ritual (Thaipusam body-piercing), Graeber's Debt (coinage, armies, slavery). Presumably the classifier pattern-matched on descriptive academic language about ostracism, killing, psychopathy, ritual self-harm, or "surveillance" — every instance descriptive, historical, and sourced to named academic works listed at the foot of the very file it flagged.
Copy-editing an anthropology essay is about as benign as text work gets. If this trips the filter, Fable 5 is unusable for humanities and social-science writing. Please tune.
