I'm also seeing this for the latest version on macOS. Claude definitely isn't installed in ~/.local/bin.

I tried to be clever and deleted said folder. Now it complains that the folder ain't there.

installMethod is native, but directory /Users/marcelstoer/.local/bin does not exist

I'm also running into this issue when installing Claude Code via MacPorts, which installs the claude binary as /opt/local/bin/claude (or more generally ${prefix}/bin/claude, because MacPorts allows customizing its installation prefix).

Claude Code works fine, but claude doctor tells me to add ~/.local/bin to my PATH, even though ~/.local/bin doesn't even exist.

This can also be reproduced without using MacPorts:

claude doctor should not recommend adding a non-existent directory to the user's PATH.

I _do_ think it would be a good recommendation to tell the user to add the directory claude is in to the user's PATH when the the directory that claude is in is not yet in the user's PATH. It might be good to change the current implementation for this doctor check to this. So, in the example above claude doctor could recommend adding /Users/breun/some-directory to the user's PATH if it wasn't added.
