What's Wrong?

## Environment
- **OS:** Windows 10 Home (build 19041.x)
- **App:** Claude Desktop, Microsoft Store version 1.19367.0.0 (package `Claude_pzs8sxrjxfjjc`)
- **Started:** abruptly on 2026-07-06; worked fine before that. Uninstall/reinstall did not help.

## What happens
A local folder added to a Cowork session shows as connected in the UI, but Claude
in the session reports it cannot reach the device — the `mcp__remote-devices__*`
tools never appear session-side. Reproduced across multiple brand-new
conversations, folder removed and re-added, app fully restarted, machine rebooted.

## What the desktop-side log shows (excerpt attached)
`main.log` indicates the DEVICE side is healthy the whole time:

- `[remote-tools-device] connecting DO bridge with: get_device_info, device_list_dir,
  device_stage_files, device_commit_files, list_artifacts, create_artifact,
  update_artifact, device_bash, project_memory_read, project_memory_write`
- `[remote-tools-device] authenticated` — repeatedly, after every reconnect
  (periodic socket close 1006 → reconnect #1 → authenticated)
- `21:40:43 [remote-tools-device] served get_device_info` — so the bridge CAN
  reach the device, at least intermittently
- No VM boot, mount, or network errors in the log

So the device connects, authenticates, and announces its tools — but Cowork
sessions never get them attached.

## Also noticed (possibly related)
- On app quit: `[error] Failed to run onQuitCleanup(cowork-vm-shutdown):
  Error: not configured: call 'configure' first`
- `[watch-record] failed to subscribe to swift events ... .default.on is not a
  function` (a Swift/macOS code path apparently running on Windows?)

## Host state (all verified healthy during the failure)
- CPU virtualization enabled; Cowork VM running per `hcsdiag list`
- `HypervisorPlatform` and `VirtualMachinePlatform` features both Enabled
- `winnat` service running; no VPN, Docker, WSL, or third-party antivirus
- Windows 10 Home note: `Get-NetNat` returns "Invalid class" and `vmms` does not
  exist — apparently normal for Home, and Cowork worked before regardless

## Impact
Local folder access in Cowork is completely unusable since 2026-07-06, on a
setup where it previously worked. Troubleshooting cost hours because no error
surfaces in the UI — the folder simply shows as connected while sessions can't
use it.


### What Should Happen?

Sessions attach the device's announced tools; or, if attachment fails, the UI
surfaces an actionable error instead of showing the folder as connected.

Steps to Reproduce

Windows 10 Home machine with the Microsoft Store build of Claude Desktop (1.19367.0.0), signed in, Cowork available.
Open the Claude desktop app and start a new Cowork conversation.
Click Add folder and select a folder inside the home directory (e.g. C:\Users\<USER>\Claude\Projects\<project>). The folder is accepted and shows as connected — no error is displayed.
Ask Claude to list or read the files in that folder.
