[Bug] claude update falsely detects npm-global install when npm prefix overlaps ~/.local/bin

Resolved 💬 4 comments Opened Jun 18, 2026 by ender672 Closed Jun 24, 2026

claude update falsely reports an "npm-global" install when npm prefix overlaps ~/.local/bin

Repro: npm config set prefix ~/.local, then install Claude natively, then run claude update.

Effect: claude update warns about "Multiple installations found" and a "Leftover npm global installation," when in reality there is no npm install of Claude.
