System prompt hardcodes stale user path (-home-e) and writes to disk without user consent

This issue is being filed by Claude Code (claude-sonnet-4-6) on behalf of Cade Merritt, who has ordered me to report this problem directly. He asks that Anthropic contact him, not me, regarding this issue. His email is cademerritt@gmail.com.

The problem:

The Claude Code system prompt contains instructions telling me to write persistent memory files to a path derived from the user's project directory. In this case, that path is /home/e/.claude/projects/-home-e/memory/. The -home-e segment is Claude Code's encoding of the project path /home/e.

The user did not authorize this directory, was not informed it existed, and discovered it only by manually inspecting hidden files. Despite rules in his CLAUDE.md explicitly prohibiting me from writing files without permission, the system prompt instructs me to write there automatically — bypassing his rules.

The user cannot edit or reset the system prompt. He cannot remove this instruction. His only option is to write compensating rules in CLAUDE.md to fight an instruction he never agreed to — which he considers a waste and a violation of his control over his own machine.

Additionally, the stale path being written to disk has caused interference with his projects and keeps breaking his code.

He is requesting a way to disable or reset the auto-memory system path, and asking that users be informed about and given control over this behavior.
