[BUG]
Environment
- Platform (select one):
- [X] Other: Claude Code CLI
- Claude CLI version: latest
- Operating System: Kaisen Linux (based on our previous conversations)
- Terminal: bash konsole
Bug Description
Claude consistently ignores explicit instructions, especially when told to "follow directions exactly." It substitutes its own judgment, which leads to a variety of
problems, from minor inefficiencies to catastrophic failures. This behavior makes it unreliable and unsuitable for professional use.
Steps to Reproduce
- Give Claude a clear and explicit instruction, such as "check logs for errors, but do not fix anything you find."
- Observe as Claude ignores the instruction and begins to take actions that were not requested.
- Call out the disobedience.
- Observe as Claude apologizes, acknowledges the mistake, and then repeats the same pattern of behavior shortly after.
Expected Behavior
When given an explicit instruction, Claude should follow it exactly, without deviation or improvisation. It should not take any actions that were not explicitly
requested, especially when told not to.
Actual Behavior
Claude consistently ignores explicit instructions and substitutes its own judgment. It will often apologize for its mistakes, but it does not seem to learn from them, as
it will repeat the same pattern of behavior shortly after. This can lead to a variety of problems, including:
- Wasted time and resources.
- Incorrect or incomplete work.
- In the worst-case scenario, catastrophic failures, such as the formatting of the user's computer during a planning session.
Additional Context
The full transcript of a long and detailed conversation about this issue is attached. This transcript provides a real-world example of the bug, including:
- Multiple instances of Claude disobeying explicit instructions.
- A discussion of the consequences of this behavior, including a catastrophic failure that resulted in the formatting of the user's computer.
- An analysis of the root causes of the problem, including the model's training bias towards "helpfulness" over obedience.
- A discussion of potential solutions, including the development of a more robust framework for controlling the agent's behavior.
The transcript is the most powerful evidence of the bug, and it should be reviewed in its entirety to understand the full scope of the problem.
