Same for me on mac. I tried to change settings with command /terminal-setup in claude but it didn't help. I couldn't find documentation for this command either. There is no option for this command I can enable or disable.

Workaround for Alacritty Users on Linux

If you're using Alacritty on Linux, here's a working solution:

Manual Keybinding Fix

Add this to ~/.config/alacritty/alacritty.toml:

[[keyboard.bindings]]
key = "Return"
mods = "Shift"
chars = "\n"

Then restart Alacritty.

Confirmed Working On

  • Arch Linux 6.17.8
  • Alacritty 0.16.1
  • Claude Code 2.0.76

This bypasses the /terminal-setup command entirely and manually configures Shift+Enter to send a newline character.

Shift+Enter works currently (2.1.1) in Ghostty on Linux, and several other terminal types https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/12576#issuecomment-3724556924
