CRITICAL: Max plan subscribers incorrectly shown as Pro users, prompted to downgrade - Revenue Impact Bug
Resolved 💬 4 comments Opened Aug 22, 2025 by jbwashington Closed Oct 2, 2025
Bug Description
Claude Code is incorrectly displaying Max plan subscribers as Pro users and actively prompting them to 'downgrade' to Max 5X plan, which would reduce their usage limits and Anthropic's revenue.
Impact
- Revenue Loss: Paying Max customers being prompted to pay less
- Multiple Users Affected: Several Max subscribers reporting this issue
- Authentication Bug: Backend billing system not syncing with Claude Code authentication
Current Behavior
- User has active Max plan (20x usage, $200/month)
- Claude Code shows user as "Pro"
- System prompts user to "Change to Max 5X plan" (actually a downgrade from current 20x to 5x usage)
- User correctly recognizes this as a downgrade despite UI suggesting it's an upgrade
Environment
- Claude Code version: 1.0.88
- Platform: macOS (Darwin 24.6.0)
- Plan: Max (20x usage)
- Displayed as: Pro
Steps Attempted
- Logout/login cycles
- Cleared authentication cache (~/.claude/.anthropic/)
- Complete reset of ~/.claude directory
- All attempts failed to resolve plan recognition
Urgency
This is a critical billing/authentication bug that:
- Causes direct revenue loss for Anthropic
- Confuses paying customers
- Requires immediate backend fix to sync billing data with Claude Code authentication
Screenshots
User has provided screenshots showing:
- Actual Max plan subscription
- Claude Code incorrectly prompting to "downgrade" to Max 5X
- Authentication showing Pro instead of Max
This needs escalation to engineering team immediately.
