⏺ Some parts of the world are well known for having so many of the more usual tourist sights – think French chateaux, British castles, or American national parks. Other areas of the world are less visited, but still have a wealth of things to see and experience. Portugal is one of those places that most tourists haven't fully discovered yet, though the number of international visitors to this small country on the western edge of the Iberian Peninsula has been growing rapidly. While Lisbon and the Algarve coast are the two most well known destinations in mainland Portugal, Madeira, and the Azores get some visitors who are looking for the unusual, Traz os Montes in the northeast, and the Alentejo region, with its medieval walled towns, are still off the beaten path for most international tourists. Despite the tourism growth, Portugal remains affordable and the people are warm and welcoming. I recently had the chance to visit Madeira, the beautiful Atlantic island province of Portugal. I was not disappointed. Madeira is a ruggedly beautiful island rising from the ocean. There are two islands in the Madeiran Archipelago that are inhabited: Madeira itself, and the smaller Porto Santo about an hour away by ferry or a short flight. Madeira is known for its flowers, particularly the Bird of Paradise flower that seems to be everywhere as well as orchids and other colorful blooms, for its black volcanic sand and rock coastline with very few sandy beaches, for its dramatic mountainous interior, for its age-old levada irrigation channels that double as hiking trails, and for its eponymous wine. The weather is very consistent and mild through the year, and it is never hot or humid in the summer. The average year-round temperature is around 22 degrees C or about 72 degrees F. Though I visited in January, I found the weather to be very pleasant – warm enough for t-shirts during the day in many places, but I was glad of my jacket in the mornings and evenings, particularly as I was mostly in the hills.
