[BUG] Running claude in a folder with a .git folder without rwx permissions for the current user prevents running bash commands
Resolved 💬 1 comment Opened May 26, 2026 by Teskann Closed Jun 26, 2026
Preflight Checklist
- [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
- [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
- [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code
What's Wrong?
Bash commands always fail before running if claude runs from a directory with a .git directory that is not accessible in RW by the current user. This prevents claude from running any bash command.
What Should Happen?
I don't know why claude code tries to write .git/hooks via bwrap, but they should consider acting like you're not in a git repository if the .git/hooks is not accessible in RW
Error Messages/Logs
bwrap: Can't create file at /path/to/project/.git/hooks: permission denied
bwrap: Can't create file at /path/to/project/.git/hooks: Is a directory
Steps to Reproduce

cd test
git init

Is this a regression?
