CLAUDE CODE - CRITICAL BUG V1.0.84 - Unable to use service

ISSUE:

• Auto-compact triggers in infinite loop at 0-9% context remaining
• Forced compaction interrupts every workflow
• Bug persists even with auto-compact disabled in settings
• Application completely unusable for 3 consecutive days

ENVIRONMENT:

• Mac Studio M4 Max, 48GB RAM, macOS 15.6.1
• Claude Code v1.0.84
• Project: OrgaVision (TypeScript/Next.js)

TROUBLESHOOTING ATTEMPTED:

1. Complete config reset: rm -rf ~/.claude/

→ Result: "zsh: command not found: claude-code"

1. Environment variables: CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_AUTOUPDATER=1

→ No effect

1. Disabled auto-compact in settings

→ Ignored by application

REQUEST:

1. How to restore Claude Code installation?
2. Fix for infinite auto-compact loop bug

I'm not associated with Anthropic, I'm just trying to speed up the resolution of https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/5374, so I thought this was related, but it doesn't seem to be.

By the way, for uninstall, have you also tried removing ~/.local/bin/claude?
And for installation, are you using the native installer?

NATIVE INSTALLATION COMPLETED:

• Claude Code native v1.0.86 successfully installed
• All configuration issues resolved
• CLAUDE DOCTOR confirms proper native setup

BUG STATUS: AUTO-COMPACT STILL BROKEN

• Context remains stuck at 10%
• Service remains completely unusable
• Issue persists across all installation methods

TECHNICAL CONCLUSION:
This is definitively a server-side session corruption issue that cannot be resolved through any client-side configuration.

Yes, I’ve had the same problem since this week.

Found a workaround. Not sure how detrimental it is to context awareness, but deleting/renaming the settings.local file in the .claude folder fixed the context issues for me. I am guessing the file just got too large for Claude to be able to effectively read because of all the bash commands it stored away that weren't reusable in most cases.

if you want to YOLO it, you can use "claude --dangerously-skip-permissions" to bypass permission prompts (the ones that when saved to the project, fill up the setting.local.json file and ultimately cause the context issue)

But that is absolute last resort and very dangerous to do. Hence the flag name....
