[BUG] Old chats wiped, no session summary

Preflight Checklist

  • [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
  • [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code

What's Wrong?

I went back to multiple Claude Code chats in the Windows app that I hadn't looked at in months, and everything is missing. It appears as a new chat and the agent thinks it's a new chat. There is no session history from a compression or anything. The agent doesn't even seem to realize there are project files e.g. claude.md until I tell it.

This is not precisly the same issue as:
This bug has do to with recent conversation disappearing after very compact or auto-compact. That is not the case with my bug.

This bug has to do with auto-compact erasing entire conversation history, which is similar except that in my case it only happens with old chats that haven't been opened in awhile.

https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/16970
Again this bug has to do with recent chat history missing - not the same issue.

What Should Happen?

Old Claude Code chats that haven't been checked in a few months shouldn't be wiped from the face of the Earth.

Steps to Reproduce

I don't know how you can reproduce this other than to work with a Claude Code chat and then let it idle for a few months. That's the situation that creates the bug on my end.

Additional Information

I'm not using a Terminal/Shell. I'm using the Windows app. Why isn't there an option for that in the above dropdown menu?
