Rate Limit Recovery Failure for Pro/Max Subscriptions in Claude Code

Resolved 💬 6 comments Opened Aug 9, 2025 by teeay-dev Closed Jan 3, 2026

Bug Description
Versions after 1.0.67 do not recover after exhausting the rate limits for Pro and Max subscriptions.

Workaround: Waiting for the reset and downgrading to 1.0.67 allows reconnecting.

However, later versions insist on "Invalid API Key" contrary to documentation stating not to use API Keys with subscriptions to prevent extra charges. Later versions do not work even after the five-hour reset using the subscription and display the "Invalid API Key" error.

In addition, Claude Code should NOT report "Invalid API Key" at all for Pro and Max subscribers, but indicate that the rate limit was reached and will be reset at what time and OFFER to use an API Key (in line with documentation).

Environment Info

  • Platform: darwin
  • Terminal: Apple_Terminal
  • Version: 1.0.67

Errors
(No errors, as I could only submit from 1.0.67, which works.)
