What's Wrong?

Hi Anthropic Support,

I'm reporting abnormal usage consumption on my Claude Code account. My usage limits are increasing without any active prompts or interaction on my end — no commands sent, no sessions actively used.

Details:

  • Usage rises passively with no user input
  • Consistent with the session-resume token drain documented in GitHub Issues #38029 and #37436
  • This behavior has been ongoing since approximately late March 2026

Environment:

  • OS: Linux (Manjaro)
  • Claude Code version: 2.1.119 (Claude Code)
  • Subscription tier: Max 5x
  • No automated workflows or background scripts invoking Claude Code

Requested actions:

  1. Investigate and confirm whether background token consumption is occurring on my account
  2. Restore or credit any usage consumed without corresponding user activity
  3. Provide a timeline for when the known caching and session-resume bugs will be resolved

Thank you.

What Should Happen?

Usage should only increase when I actively send prompts or execute commands in Claude Code.

When no session is active and no user input is provided, there should be zero token consumption and no change in usage limits.

Idle states, background processes, or session restoration should not consume tokens without explicit user interaction.

Error Messages/Logs

No explicit error messages are shown.

However, usage metrics increase silently in the background without any visible requests or commands executed.

No relevant logs are displayed in the CLI during idle periods.

Running Claude Code with verbose/debug flags does not show corresponding API calls or token usage that would justify the increase.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Log into Claude Code (version 2.1.119) on Linux (Manjaro)
  2. Ensure no active prompts or commands are running
  3. Leave the session idle (no interaction)
  4. Monitor usage dashboard over time
  5. Observe that usage increases despite no user activity
  1. Restart Claude Code and repeat the idle state
  2. Observe continued passive usage increase
