[BUG] Regression: Claude Code developer desktop UI removed; Cowork is not an equivalent replacement
Preflight Checklist
- [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
- [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
- [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code
What's Wrong?
The Claude Desktop app no longer provides a dedicated Claude Code developer UI.
Only Claude Cowork is available as the agentic desktop interface, and it does not support developer workflows with the same usability, interaction model, or ergonomics that the previous Claude Code desktop experience offered.
As a result, Claude Code is effectively CLI-only, despite previously having a significantly more user-friendly desktop UI for coding tasks.
Why this is a regression
The prior Claude Code desktop UI was significantly more efficient for:
- structured coding tasks
- longer interactive sessions
- iterative development workflows
Cowork is optimized for non‑coding, document- and file‑oriented tasks and lacks parity for developer use cases.
Removing a usable Claude Code desktop experience materially degrades usability, even though the underlying agent capabilities still exist via CLI.
This represents a usability regression, not just a product repositioning.
What Should Happen?
Claude Code should have a first‑class desktop UI suitable for development workflows, or a clearly defined developer mode within the desktop app that restores the prior Claude Code experience.
Cowork should not be treated as an equivalent replacement for developer-focused usage.
