[FEATURE] JetBrains need some love - a real Claude AI Assist interface plugin

Problem Statement

I often use AI Assist like in-built Jetbrains, Junie, etc but now they all require subscription to use my Claude Pro.

I installed "Claude Code [Beta]" plugin and it's just a basically a terminal interface with no ability to "add file" or "add reference" inside an editor, as well, couldn't correct my sentence by using a mouse.

It's annoying to be forced to move terminal to the sidebar to use Claude Code as a sidebar because I prefer to leave terminal on bottom of the screen. It's not possible to have both Claude Code on sidebar and the terminal on the bottom, until Claude developers an actual plugin that don't open the Jetbrains terminal.

Other people have opened this similar issue but it got closed due to 7 days inactivity. I would like to know if Claude team is working on it and taking this seriously because a lot of developers use Jetbrains. It's not some niche editor for small base of developers, a lot of developers do use Jetbrains too.

Proposed Solution

I would like the "real" interface plugin to be available for Jetbrains (I'm using WebStorm) instead of just a terminal.

VSCode has received this type of love, it's similar to AI assist/Junie which require another pro membership in order to use Claude API with input bar, + context picker and / command bar.

An ability to use a terminal on bottom of the screen instead of the sidebar, currently, Claude Code [Beta] uses a Jetbrain terminal and I'm forced to move it to the sidebar and all terminals would be on sidebars too. It's not possible to have a terminal on bottom and the Claude Code on the sidebar in the current state.

I've seen other issues regarding this but they all got closed. Are Claude working on this interface so Jetbrains would get the same love as VSCode receive?

Thanks.

I would like to mentioned that duplicated issues keep getting closed. Do they take this IDE (Jetbrains) seriously?

I just noticed that it doesn't even have features other AI Assist have, like it doesn't have:

  1. History to display your previous prompts
  2. Rollback feature after unwanted prompt changes - when I asked it to rollback the whole thing, it asked me to specify.
  3. Integrated highlight for reference.
dmxt · 3 months ago

Additionally, a "+" button or @ inside command line to refer a file.

All I want to know, is it part of your development plan?

Examples of AI assist

Inserting a code with an instruction in-editor

Clear example to tell users to use specific symbol in order to add files with @ command (or use + icon)

Super simple interface to add files (with + icon) instead of manually adding files one by one using a CLI-style dropdown. Claude [Code] does not have an ability to select files in sub-directory even with @ command.

+1, would be very cool to have the same ui as vs code extension

Thank you for replying before this ticket get auto-closed due to one week of inactivity. It really need some attention from Claude team. Professionals actually do use Jetbrains.

Add to this list that the statusLine doesn't render in the IntelliJ terminal after the first turn or two.

Thank you very much for the contribution! Let's power the Jetbrains to the full potential with Claude.

It’s been about a month now with no response from developers. I’m curious to know if they are actively working on this project or it's on the bottom of priority shelf.

I found an Unicode bug with this claude code interface on WebStorm.

Found another bug, the Claude Code terminal didn't highlight links correctly, forcing me to copy and paste the link to open it.

More bug reports:

One emoji renders fully while the other with same width doesn't inside Jetbrains terminal.

Also some pretty bad text glitches.

I noticed that on your Claude Code advertisement page that show a misleading image for Jetbrains. It doesn't even separate terminal, my environment the way how I work, I leave the terminal on the bottom but using Claude Code, I'm forced to move the terminal to the sidebar and this is not good practice for most developers.

I would like to know if your team is actively working on this plugin for Jetbrains.

This would be a great addition. I really prefer how Junie / Codex work in the AI Assistant view and would like to use my Claude Code subscription the same way instead of being forced into API-Key usage for using Claude Agent (while still not knowing how they differ).

I absolutely agree. To my understanding, AI assist tools like Junie are all separate subscription that is required to use a nicer AI interface to use a Claude Pro subscription. Meaning you have to pay two subscription for an interface and for Claude.

Claude has already made the interface for VSCode, and developers also use Jetbrains, it's not some tiny base of devs, there's a relatively large base that do use Jetbrains and I'm hoping that we'll get same treatment.

I'm waiting for some response from the Claude team to see if they're actively working on this issue.

Claude Code [Beta] on Jetbrains prompted me to make a screenshot, it prompted me just to drag & drop or just paste a screenshot, that really hurt because it obviously didn't work as it's just a terminal.

You seriously making me to copy and paste the PATH of the screenshot that it probably won't have an access to?

This is the state of your Jetbrains Claude software. Are you working on it AT ALL for Jetbrains, the IDE for the professionals?

Edit: Why are you making this ultra difficult to share a screenshot with Claude Code on Jetbrains?

By implementing https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/61306 Claude Code Desktop would essentially become a GUI plugin for Jetbrains IDEs without any heavy work having to be done in the Jetbrains plugin. And it would work with all other IDEs and editors that support /ide in the CLI.

mlidbom · 1 month ago

There's a workaround that at least gets you a the desktop/claude.ai GUI for the chat history input box etc right now.

Selection context etc works correctly even if you enter your prompts on the web instead of in the terminal too. You can't see that it works from there, but it is attached and you can see it in the terminal.
It's hacky, but it works.

Waiting for a response from Claude team.

the part that breaks with a terminal-embed plugin isn't the missing context picker, it's that the agent's session is bolted to the terminal pane's lifecycle. close the tab or restart the IDE and the conversation is gone, so every morning starts with re-explaining the codebase. the sidebar with + context is the visible ask, but the deeper gap is the agent loop owning no state outside the terminal. a real interface has to hold the session itself, not borrow the terminal's, otherwise you get the VSCode look with the same disposable history.

I understand. It shouldn't behave like that, see other AI assist tools like Cascade that preserve history. Also my only grip with being forced to put a terminal on sidebar in Jetbrains is that I can't use a terminal on bottom. Where I put Claude is where my terminal will be. I would like to be able to use a terminal as a bottom dock and Clade on sidebar.

Now that the Opus came out, it's getting more expensive to use, I'm expecting better from the IDE dev team. For how long is the plugin in beta already?

dmxt · 1 month ago

Bumping so the thread won't get auto-closed after one week of no activity. Still waiting to hear from the dev team on Jetbrains' plugin. Developers use Jetbrains too... it's not some niche small circle of group.

For me the worst lack was not being able to click a symbol or file that Claude mentions and have it open the correct file and line in Rider. Well I ended up building a Rider plugin: .NET Terminal Symbol Linker

The source is here: https://github.com/mlidbom/RiderTerminalSymbolLinker
(The repository has the full infrastructure to build and publish the plugin to the marketplace. So anyone that wants to have this for IDEA, PyCharm etc. can just fork and ask Opus to swap out the Rider specific details. )

Alternatively, enable OAUTH flow for Enterprise subscriptions for JetBrains AI Assistant or JetBrains AIR.

Alternatively, enable OAUTH flow for Enterprise subscriptions for JetBrains AI Assistant or JetBrains AIR.

Is that a thing or need to be added? I'm not on Enterprise subscription.

markAtAthena · 17 days ago

Yes, with Codex it is possible due to OpenAI allowing OAUTH for 3rd party applications:

Bumping this thread (so it won't get auto-closed) to see if Claude team will give it some love ❤️

We need it!

Strongly agree. The terminal-embedded approach inherits every limitation of the IDE's terminal emulator — word selection and copy/paste don't respect word boundaries, and there's no way to click to reposition the cursor while editing input. Beyond the mouse issues, running the CLI inside a terminal tool window feels bolted-on rather than integrated. A first-class tool-window panel with a native input surface (comparable to Copilot Chat / Gemini Code Assist) would resolve both the ergonomics and the architectural concerns at once. GoLand user here — happy to test.
