Is it an Anthropic failure to communicate or a hidden agenda?

The core issue is this:

Claude is, arguably, one of the most capable development tools available today. Developers—many of us with limited budgets—are constantly weighing performance against cost to get the best value for our work. We’re not hobbyists playing with toys; we’re serious builders trying to get things done.

Anthropic, like others, is trying to grow its user base. That’s understandable. But here’s where things go sideways:

AI providers keep changing policies, limits, and pricing models with little notice or clarity. The result? Users are left confused, blindsided, and burned—wasting time, money, and more importantly, trust. Confidence in the entire industry takes a hit every time this happens.

Of course, providers need to make money. No one’s disputing that. Infrastructure isn’t cheap, and innovation requires investment. But these truths coexist with another:

When a company introduces sudden, restrictive policies or rate limits—especially after promoting a tool as the best of its class—it sends a clear message: “We don’t really respect your time, your workflow, or your loyalty.”

Users see the hype. “Model A is five times better than B,” they’re told. Naturally, they assume that means they can do five times more. But when they hit arbitrary walls—A 5 5 becomes A * 0 real fast—they feel misled, manipulated, and ultimately punished for believing the promise.

That’s not how you build a community. That’s how you undermine one.
