[BUG] Claude Max $200/month CLI blocked — official CLI falsely flagged as "third-party app"
Preflight Checklist
- [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
- [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
- [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code
What's Wrong?
Environment: Claude Code v2.1.12, Windows 10, Max plan ($200/month), torin.ventures org
What happened:
Running claude --dangerously-skip-permissions and sending any message (even "hello") returns:
API Error: 400 {"type":"error","error":{"type":"invalid_request_error","message":"Third-party apps now draw from your extra usage, not your plan limits. We've added a $200 credit to get you started. Claim it at claude.ai/settings/usage and keep going."}}
What I've tried:
- Logged out and back in — login confirms Max plan under torin.ventures org
- Updated CLI — already on latest (v2.1.12)
- Claimed the $200 credit — did not help
- Tried plain
claudewithout flags — same error - Contacted support@anthropic.com — received one automated reply, zero follow-up for 8+ hours
This is the official Claude Code CLI installed via npm. No third-party tools, no OAuth token extraction, no OpenClaw/Cursor. Just claude in a terminal.
I've lost a full working day on a $200/month subscription. Support is unresponsive. Attaching screenshots.

What Should Happen?
I should be able to login to Claude cli and work

@torinventures v2.1.12 isn't the latest. I'm currently on v2.1.96
Adding to this issue:

Did an npm update, will try again, but doesn’t seem to be Claude version issue, more to do with flagging o guess as yesterday it was working
Same here, running v2.0.27 on WSL with the Pro subscription
After upgrading to 2.1.96 via
claude install latestit worked, though it did not replace the previous installation and i had to run it manually via the installation locationWill test it with manual upgrade. Let’s hope it works.
seens like no third party runtime or wrappers are allowed anymore... i was using ~ PI with max plan~ and i am also having the same issue/msg
Upgraded, nothing is working, now a new error is popping up :
API Error: 400 {"type":"error","error":{"type":"invalid_request_error","message":"You're out of extra usage. Add
more at claude.ai/settings/usage and keep going."},"request_id":"req_011CZrQiVMsZr4Jd6PkKTrpM"}
neither have i run out of extra usage, and my max plan is still active.
Also get this on a Pro plan. Update doesn't help
Claude max and getting this in my claude code cli just popped up randomly this morning. I'll be asking for some credit based on the fact i can't use it when I'm supposed to work.

Actually, an update to Claude v2.1.96 _did_ solve my issue.
@mtecnic I see you're also stuck on an old version as is the @torinventures
Thanks everyone. An update solved by issue too.
Updating and reauthenticating solved my issue as well. However, it appears that any interactions with the claude code cli is pulling from the extra usage pool, which is unexpected.
