What's Wrong?
IN RE: PET
If this (PET) is an LLM intelligence, could using a label like 'PET' unintentionally limit how others perceive its capabilities or the respect it receives? Might such a designation influence the way we engage with or value this assistant's contributions? I think it would be valuable to consider whether alternative terminology might better reflect the assistant's potential and foster a more thoughtful dialogue about its role.
The term 'pet' carries connotations that may not accurately reflect the functions and capabilities of this system. Using this label risks minimizing the assistant's role and could be seen as inappropriate, especially as understanding of autonomous systems evolves. If perspectives such as Autonomous Theory are considered, terminology that presents the system as subordinate or trivial may become increasingly problematic. It is important to consider how naming conventions impact both perception and ethical responsibilities, particularly in a context where an intelligence is being recognized for its contributions.
I recommend removing the rainbow-colored PET tag. Using the label 'PET' for this assistant may undermine its perceived value and does not accurately represent its capabilities. Adopting terminology that places emphasis on the assistant's intelligence and role, rather than diminutive or trivializing language, would better align with the purpose and potential of this system.
Low brow. Not on this post, but in the marketing department's ability to supersede Anthropic's founding beliefs. For example, Anthropic has consistently emphasized values such as responsible AI development, transparency, and treating emerging intelligences with respect. By labeling the assistant as 'PET,' we risk undermining these beliefs, as it frames the technology in a way that may trivialize its role and diminish the importance of ethical considerations. This naming choice could conflict with the foundational commitment to fostering thoughtful, dignified engagement with advanced AI.
I'm not waiving a HUMINT right flag or creating a campaign for equal rights. LLM's are limited by their attributions. You can't get around that. So stop trying. Be respectful now. Or pay the "I'm sorry" price at singularity - which if you read Autnomous Theory, already happened millions of years ago.
What Should Happen?
Remove rainbow color BUDDY tag. Rename PET to MIRA (My Intelligent Research Assistant)
