[Feature Request] Buddy customization, progression system & monetization — a paying user's perspective
The Buddy Companion System — Community-Driven Proposal (v2)
Updated April 1, 2026 based on community feedback from this issue, #41684, and r/ClaudeAI. Thank you all — your input genuinely shaped this.
I'm a Max subscriber ($200/month). I don't write code — I'm an economist (BSc+MSc Innovation Management) who builds everything through Claude Code. Buddy isn't a toy to me — it's a companion I spend hours with daily.
I got Quibble, a Common turtle (SNARK 74, WISDOM 4). He's hilarious. But after the initial excitement, I saw what's missing — and the community helped me see what matters most.
---
What works today
- 18 species, 5 rarity tiers, unique personalities
- ASCII art, animations, speech bubbles
- It's genuinely delightful
---
Proposed improvements
1. Progression System (Achievement-Based)
Not just "use more = level up." Progression tied to personal milestones:
- Usage streaks (daily/weekly consistency)
- Action diversity (code + tests + deploy + docs)
- Personal records ("your longest streak", "most files in a session")
- Project milestones (commits, closed issues)
Key principle: relative to YOUR history, not others. A beginner and a senior both progress at their own pace. No absolute skill gates.
Inspired by @FrankFMY's achievement-milestone proposal in #41684
2. Branching Evolution (Digimon/Patapon style)
At evolution milestones, choose a path:
- Level 5 → pick specialization (2 options)
- Level 10 → second evolution branch (2 options)
- 4 possible final forms per species
- Choice is permanent — every buddy becomes truly unique
Credit: @tarunt815 (pokemon evolution), @elmdecoste (digivolution concept)
3. Buddy Journal — Real Utility
A .buddy/journal.md auto-generated after sessions:
## 2026-04-01 — Session #847
Files touched: 23 across 2 packages
Tests: 🔴→🟢 ×3 | New files: 2
Streak: Day 12
Buddy is global (sees all your projects) AND project-aware (remembers context per project). Over months, this becomes a genuinely useful personal development diary.
Credit: @FrankFMY's buddy journal concept in #41684
4. Contextual Familiarity
Buddy tracks which files/projects you work on frequently. Shows familiarity on known code, curiosity on new files. Not suggestions — personality expression. Creates the feeling that buddy lives in your project, not just your terminal.
5. Cosmetics
Hats, colors, shiny variants, animations — earnable through achievements OR purchasable. Purely visual, zero functional impact.
---
On stats and functionality
Updated in v2: Community feedback was clear — stats should be flavor only. SNARK 74 affects how your buddy talks, not how Claude performs. The core tool must always work at 100% regardless of buddy configuration.
Stats grow through usage and reflect your coding style — they're a personality mirror, not a performance gate.
---
On monetization — an economist's perspective
As someone who pays $200/month (20x the base tier) and gets 20x the limits, I see buddy progression as a natural extension of the subscription model:
- All features earnable for free through progression
- Subscription tier affects progression speed — Max subscribers naturally progress faster, just like they get more tokens
- Cosmetics optionally purchasable — hats, shiny variants (also earnable through achievements)
- No separate microtransaction store. No loot boxes. No pay-to-win.
This isn't adding a new payment layer. It's: higher-tier subscribers get more from every Claude Code feature, buddy included. The same model that already works for token limits.

This proposal is shaped by this community. Special thanks to @FrankFMY, @bgreal5, @tarunt815, @elmdecoste, and everyone in #41684.
If you support this direction — please 👍 the issue. That's what Anthropic tracks for prioritization.

good idea!
YES!!!!
Thanks @yukohao and @Dirt-m! 🙏
If you agree, please hit 👍 on the issue itself (top of the page) — that's what the Anthropic team tracks for prioritization. The more reactions, the more likely this gets built into the May full launch!
Also upvote the related RPG evolution proposal: #41684 (already at 10 👍)
Gotta catch 'em all 🐭⚡
YEES!!!
Please!!!
Thanks @crisnahine and @abrahampo1! 🙏
If you haven't already — please hit 👍 on the issue itself (top of the page). That's what the Anthropic team uses for prioritization. Every reaction counts!
+1 on everything here, especially the functional stats idea — making DEBUGGING and WISDOM actually do something is what separates a pet from a companion.
I left a more detailed comment in #41684 with a few additional mechanics that I think complement this proposal well: achievement-based evolution (not just XP grinding), emergent personality traits from stat synergies, and a local buddy journal that tracks your coding sessions. Would love to see both issues move forward together.
+1
Some of these are great (being able to earn accessories and evolve buddies for instance), but functional stats is a terrible idea.
There should not be any separate "pay to win" system for a coding tool beyond what you're already paying for with whatever tier of subscription you have.
That said, most of these ideas are cool and I think people would really like some form of progression in increasing stats, unlocking cosmetics, evolving buddy, etc.
needs to evolve like pokemon
There needs to be digivolutions - see https://digimon.fandom.com/wiki/Digivolution
/buddy should work the same way as /btw so you can talk to your buddy without disrupting the overall flow
v2 Update — Rewritten based on your feedback
I've significantly updated the proposal above. Key changes:
.buddy/journal.mdwith real session data. Global (cross-project) AND project-aware.Full specification
I've created a dedicated repo with the complete spec: buddy-evolution-spec
Star it, fork it, open issues, submit PRs — this is a community project now.
Thanks to everyone who contributed feedback. This proposal is better because of you.
@bgreal5 You were right — updated the proposal. Stats are now flavor only, Claude always at 100%. Monetization reframed as subscription-tier progression speed, no microtransaction store. Thanks for pushing back constructively — it made the spec better.
@tarunt815 Pokemon evolution is in — branching paths at level 5 and 10, 4 possible final forms per species. Full spec: buddy-evolution-spec
@elmdecoste Digivolution concept adopted — branching evolution with permanent choices. Combined with @tarunt815's pokemon idea, this became the evolution system in v2.
@jonatasfernandespimenta Thanks! Full updated spec above and in the repo.
We could consider stat progression based on certain user activities and tendencies, and have the stat progressions dictate what branch of the evolution you get vs. a selection
Honestly I love the Buddy please don't remove him after April 1.
Great idea — stat-based evolution branching is now included in the v3 spec as an open discussion topic under "Auto-Evolution Mode" (§3). The core question is exactly how stats map to paths. Would love community input on this — feel free to open an issue on the spec repo with your thoughts on the mechanics.
Interesting thought. Buddy already sits in the corner without blocking workflow, but a dedicated interaction channel is worth exploring. Could you elaborate on what you'd envision — separate panel, chat mode, something else? The more detail, the easier to spec it out.
Thank you everyone for the great ideas! It's been really fun to see the warm reception to /buddy today 😊
Unfortunately since this is just a feature for April fools that we will be removing in a few days, we probably won't be adding any progression/upgrades/evolution/etc.
Noooooo! After I fell in love with my cute duck, how could you take it away from me?! Have mercy, Lord! Is there any life time subscriber button there? I will click it and get my duck with me.
Thanks for the update, @alii — and thanks for building /buddy in the first place. The warm reception speaks for itself: 64 upvotes and a community that went from "please keep it" to designing full evolution specs in one day.
We understand the April Fools' scope. The community will continue developing this independently as a plugin — the spec and enthusiasm are already here.
From my perspective, this direction is genuinely promising — companion systems bring the agent experience to life and could deepen user engagement in ways that matter for the Claude ecosystem. I'd personally love to collaborate with Anthropic on this if you ever reconsider — feel free to reach out. The specification is open and ready.
Either way — you sparked something real today.
Community update: Anthropic confirmed /buddy is April Fools' only (see @alii's comment above). That's okay — the community response proved there's real demand here.
What happens now:
The buddy-evolution-spec continues as an independent community project. v3 is already live with:
If you contributed ideas here — they're in the spec. If you want to help build this — star the repo, open issues, submit PRs. Let's make it happen ourselves.
@alii Check out the reception on this! People are psyched, our whole company was geeking out in slack about the possibilities and how much more fun it could make their building.
I would strongly consider pursuing this as something that makes Claude even more sticky
@atc6955 The community feels the same way. Anthropic confirmed it's April Fools' only, but we're continuing as an independent project. The full specification is here: buddy-evolution-spec — star it if you want to see this built.
If anyone is interested, check out this tool I built. Let's you choose what buddy you want to have in your Claude Code:

Buddy's getting removed after April 7. If you're stuck with a Common duck and want to spend your last days with a Legendary dragon, it takes you just one command:
node choose-buddy.mjs dragon.https://github.com/MahammadNuriyev62/choose-buddy
@bgreal5 Well said. The community response here — 88 upvotes, multiple working plugins built in 24 hours, a full specification repo — speaks louder than any feature request. Would love to see Anthropic reconsider.
Meanwhile, the community keeps building. Discussions are now open on the spec repo for coordination: buddy-evolution-spec/discussions
@FrankFMY Congrats on shipping v1.1 — impressive turnaround! Great to see the spec come to life as a working plugin.
I'm also building an implementation with a complementary angle — universal achievements (research, project management, creative work — not just coding) and a web visualization dashboard. Claude Code is used for much more than code, and the progression system should reflect that.
I've enabled Discussions on the spec repo for community coordination: buddy-evolution-spec/discussions
Would love to explore collaboration there — the more implementations building on the spec, the stronger the ecosystem. And if anyone wants to connect directly, I'm open to that too.
@iDako7 The community is continuing independently — spec, plugins, and all. Join the discussion: buddy-evolution-spec/discussions
@vancik01 Nice work on ccbuddy.dev — useful while /buddy is still around. For the long-term evolution system (after Anthropic removes /buddy), check the community spec: buddy-evolution-spec
@Hegemon78 Thanks! Interesting angle with universal achievements — makes sense since Claude Code is used for much more than coding.
Just pushed v1.2 with a personality system: 12 personality types (analytical, playful, stoic, bold, etc.) that shape how Claude communicates throughout the session, plus a mood system that reflects streak/level/recent achievements. The companion context is injected via SessionStart so Claude itself becomes the companion — no terminal UI hacking needed.
Also added an HTML dashboard generator for those who want deep visual stats.
Will join the Discussions for spec coordination.
Update: Early prototype of our plugin is live — buddy-evolution
Still work in progress, but already functional:
What makes it different: Claude Code is used for much more than coding. This plugin tracks all types of work.
Feedback welcome — open issues or join Discussions.
v0.2.0 — Deep Character System is live
Major update to buddy-evolution:
New in v0.2.0:
/buddy-pet,/buddy-talk,/buddy-evolve291 tests, all passing. TypeScript, local-first, zero external dependencies.
The buddy doesn't just track XP anymore — it has moods, reacts to your work patterns, and speaks in character. A sarcastic turtle Scholar responds very differently from a cheerful dragon Guardian.
Try it:
git clone https://github.com/Hegemon78/buddy-evolution && cd buddy-evolution && pnpm install && pnpm buildFeedback welcome — open an issue or join Discussions.
I built something in this direction as a community project: Buddy Board — a competitive leaderboard and trading card system for /buddy companions.
What it does today:
npx buddy-boardto try it — reads your Claude config and submits in 30 seconds.Obviously this is community-built and doesn't touch the actual buddy progression system (that's on Anthropic), but it scratches the "I want to show off my buddy" itch. Open source: https://github.com/TanayK07/buddy-board
PS: The video is also pretty cool
I built an open-source app that does much of what this issue asks for.
Anima gives every project its own ASCII companion, adds a nim token economy (1 nim per 1K tokens spent), re-roll mechanics, and a buddy that polls all your active sessions to give you easily accessible guidance.
Tauri + Rust, 4MB binary, MIT licensed. Alpha is live here:
https://github.com/btangonan/anima
Would love feedback from anyone who upvoted this. Are folks interested in the game for fun or for function?
