Anthropic API Overloaded Error with Repeated 529 Status Codes

Usage has been cut in half and dumbed down. Inside info is they are using their servers to prioritize training for sonnet 4.5 to launch at the same time as xAI dedicated coding model. xAI coding logic is very close to sonnet 4 and has anthropic scrambling. xAI sucks at making designs but codes really well.

And we are not already paying enough for them to do that on the budget while keeping the service running?

This sounds slightly ridiculous. We pay $200 p/m to get overloaded messages, for them to train bigger models, so that we can pay $400 per month for those new models.

It's frustrating, because we all have deliverables and deadlines, but I've barely been able to use it since yesterday. Simple automation tasks are taking hours. Paying $200 and not getting reliable uptime shows a disregard for your customers.

Ah! When you use Claude Code you only get access to only one model! When you use Warp you use many models to solve the same problem! One goes down no big deal use a different one!

That's a 529 "overloaded" error, which means the Claude API is experiencing high demand right now and temporarily can't handle all the requests coming in. The good news is that Claude Code is automatically retrying for you with increasing delays between attempts. This kind of thing usually resolves itself as traffic decreases, but since you mentioned it was working fine 20 minutes ago, it's likely a temporary spike in usage.

I wanted to switch my model to claude entirely but with this its a no-no. Will have to bring gemini back.

I dont remember how to work without this tool. +1 please fix. Claude Pro Max subscriber here and it is not working.

I am not sure they will be able to keep up to the xAI and Google infrastructure increase pace. It seems that coding is the new hot spot, where they can make money. I love Claude Code, but the landscape changes very fast. We better systematically try other AI coders.

Just last month, I was using Max5 I was trying it out so I really pushed the usage limit and only after 2-3 hours of REALLY trying to reach the limit, then I'd get the timeout for like 1-2 hours which was fine. Never got this overloaded non-sense.
After the trial, was really happy so I upgraded to MAX20, not to push it for fun, just hope for better quality due to my small use I'd get to use Opus more. but no! OVERLOADED OVERLOADED OVERLOADED...

Even our internal tools that uses their own API keys on Anthropic also gets error! Why they don't even want money!?

Asking Claude to rewrite this message with Sonnet 4 (not thinking or search etc..) Also get overloaded.

I’m experiencing the exact same issue since the plan changes and the rollout of Max. The user experience has honestly tanked. I consistently get 529 errors, especially in the afternoons and late nights (San Francisco and CDMX time). There’s barely any official communication or transparency on what’s going on, and it’s directly impacting productivity. If this keeps up, I’ll have to start looking at alternatives. When I started development, both Claude and I knew the code. Now, only Claude knows it.

I just switched from cursor (mainly working with o3 or sonnet 4) to claude code. results are so much better. almost no mistakes. so no, moving back is no option.

No, I don't think the issue lies in the connection between claude code and the cursor editor; I believe the problem is with claude code itself.

It keeps retrying with increasing delays, but never succeeds. From what I can tell, this seems to be a backend overload issue.
Just wanted to report in case it helps with visibility. Let me know if there’s a workaround or if this is currently being addressed.

The system encounters repeated 529 "Overloaded" errors with exponential backoff retry attempts, ultimately failing with a 500 Internal Server Error.

I've found switching the model from Opus (I'm on Max20) to Sonnet vaguely improved err rate. But I might just be imagining it.

Dropped claude code in the end. Tried Sonnet 4 with Cline and OpenRouter - the results are significantly better and higher quality, but there's a catch - a fairly simple task with 200 lines of code cost $1 based on the number of tokens. Subscription models are indeed heavily limited; if you need quality, it's worth switching to token-based usage.
