Claude Code shows as version number in macOS Privacy & Security settings

Summary

Claude Code appears as its version number (e.g., "2.1.76") instead of "Claude Code" in macOS Privacy & Security settings. This makes it difficult for users to identify what application has been granted access to their data.

Details

The binary is installed at ~/.local/share/claude/versions/2.1.76, and macOS uses the folder name as the display name in System Settings > Privacy & Security. This means the app shows up as "2.1.76" in the list of apps with access to things like Documents, Downloads, Media Library, and Network Volumes.

Why this matters

The Privacy & Security panel is specifically designed so users can audit what applications have access to sensitive data. Showing a version number instead of the app name defeats that purpose and forces users to investigate what "2.1.76" actually is. This is especially problematic because:

  • It appears in a security-critical context where clear identification is essential
  • It may cause users to deny permissions they'd otherwise grant, or worse, leave permissions granted to something they can't identify
  • Claude Code appears to be the only app that behaves this way on macOS

Expected behavior

Claude Code should appear as "Claude Code" (with its icon, ideally) in all macOS Privacy & Security permission lists.

Environment

  • macOS Darwin 25.3.0
  • Claude Code version 2.1.76
  • Installed via standard CLI installation
