Preflight Checklist

  • [x] I have searched existing requests and this feature hasn't been requested yet
  • [x] This is a single feature request (not multiple features)

Problem Statement

I use claude over an ssh connection, which at times is slow. There is a lot of activity when Claude is thinking. The asterisk character spins through a sequence of different characters, the funny word (eg, discombobulating, etc) changes colors, the character in my tab cycles through different characters. All of that is pretty and fun, but it adds unnecessary overhead that makes it painful to work with Claude.

Proposed Solution

Is it possible to keep the current functionality as a default, but add in an option to allow users to slow down the spinner activity. I would probably set mine to 1 update per second if I had the option.

Alternative Solutions

Maybe a single "slow connection" option that simply drops the "useless" updates from happening at all, though this seems less than ideal as these spinners provide contextual information about Claude's state that would be difficult to infer otherwise.

Priority

Medium - Would be very helpful

Feature Category

Performance and speed

Use Case Example

  1. I launch an ssh window
  2. I run tmux to maintain state across broken network connections
  3. I launch Claude to do some work on the remote machine
  4. The ssh connection gets all delayed due to the constant spinner churn
  5. I ask Claude for help
  6. Claude recommends setting the new config option "spinner fps" to 1
  7. Yay! I can work now!
