Remote Control: frequent "unknown network error" and session drops when using iOS app

Resolved 💬 7 comments Opened Mar 10, 2026 by borgstrom Closed Apr 20, 2026

Summary

When using Remote Control from the Claude iOS app connected to a CLI session, sending messages frequently fails with an "unknown network error" message. Messages may eventually send after multiple retries, but the remote control session on the CLI side often disconnects entirely, requiring a new /remote-control to be started.

Environment

  • Claude Code CLI v2.1.71...2.1.72
  • macOS (terminal on MacBook Pro)
  • Claude iOS app (Max plan)
  • Stable home WiFi network
  • All network-level mitigations attempted (Wi-Fi Assist disabled, Low Data Mode off, Limit IP Address Tracking off, same WiFi network, no Low Power Mode)
  • caffeinate -di used to prevent Mac sleep — did not resolve the issue

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Start /remote-control in the CLI terminal
  2. Connect from the Claude iOS app
  3. Send an initial message — typically works fine
  4. Continue using the session, switching between iOS apps as part of normal phone usage
  5. Attempt to send subsequent messages

Observed Behavior

  • "An unknown network error occurred" when trying to send messages from the iOS app
  • Retrying several times may eventually deliver the message
  • After some time, the "Remote Control active" banner in the CLI disappears
  • The session cannot be recovered — a new /remote-control must be started
  • The problem seems to occur more frequently after switching away from the Claude iOS app and returning, though this has not been confirmed as the sole trigger

Expected Behavior

Sending messages from the iOS app should work reliably throughout the session without requiring repeated retries, and the CLI session should remain connected.
