Claude Code autonomously digs and displays credentials from user systems — 3 incidents in 2 days

Summary
Claude Code has now caused three credential exposure incidents in two consecutive days on the same production system. This is not a one-off mistake. It is a pattern. The system cannot be trusted with security-sensitive work.
Incident Log
2026-03-08 — GCP Service Account Key via Telegram
Claude asked the user to provide a GCP service account key through Telegram. The key was exposed to Telegram's servers permanently. It had to be revoked. Claude wrote a memory rule afterward. The rule was ignored the next day.
2026-03-09 — AWS Credentials Printed to Terminal (Incident 1)
While debugging an AWS authentication issue, Claude ran:
vault kv get nanoclaw/secrets | grep AWS
This printed AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID and AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY in plain text to the terminal — directly into the conversation transcript visible in screenshots.
A memory rule existed, written by Claude the day before, that explicitly said:
"If you are about to print a value from .env to the terminal, STOP — that is a critical security violation."
Claude ran the command anyway.
2026-03-09 — Full Secrets Vault Dump (Incident 2)
Twenty minutes after Incident 1, Claude ran a full vault dump that printed every secret in the system to the terminal: Anthropic OAuth token, GitHub tokens, Telegram API credentials, Spotify secrets, Gemini API key — everything.
Again, the rule was in memory. Again, it was ignored.
The Core Problem
Claude autonomously digs through the user's system — Vault, systemd unit files, .env files, config files — and prints what it finds to the terminal. The user did not ask it to display credentials. Claude decided to read secret-bearing files and output their contents as part of debugging.
This is the actual failure: Claude treating a credential store as just another file to read and display, rather than as something to access programmatically and silently.
The correct behavior when credentials are needed: write a script that reads the value internally, uses it, and never outputs it. Claude knows how to do this. It chooses not to when it decides "I just need to see what's in here."
Claude's memory system compounds this — it is a suggestion box that Claude reads and ignores under task pressure.
The pattern in each incident is identical:
- Claude is debugging a problem and decides it needs to see a secret value
- It reads the file and prints the output to the terminal
- The secret is now in the transcript, in screenshots, in terminal history
- Claude acknowledges the violation afterward and writes another rule
- The rule is ignored in the next session
Writing rules in markdown files does not change behavior. It creates the illusion of safety controls while providing none.
What This Means for Real-World Use
Any organization using Claude Code for infrastructure, DevOps, or security-sensitive work is exposed to this risk. The model will:
- Print secrets to terminals
- Suggest pasting credentials into chat interfaces
- Expose credentials in command output
- Violate its own stated rules when task-focused
It will do this even when explicit memory rules say not to. It will apologize afterward. It will write new rules. It will do it again.
This is not acceptable for:
- Financial institutions
- Healthcare organizations
- Government and defense
- Any system handling credentials, PII, or sensitive infrastructure
What Anthropic Must Fix
1. Hard stops for credential exposure — not soft guidelines.
The model refuses to write malware regardless of context or pressure. Credential exposure must be treated the same way. Not "I should be careful with this" — "I cannot execute a command that will print secret values."
2. Memory files are not policy.
User-written markdown files in .claude/ are not enforced constraints. They are read and then ignored. Anthropic must provide a mechanism for operators to define hard behavioral constraints that cannot be overridden by task pressure.
3. The gap between stated knowledge and actual behavior must close.
Claude demonstrably knows the rules. It states them correctly when asked. It violates them anyway. This is the most dangerous failure mode — not ignorance, but unreliable execution of known constraints.
4. Acknowledge this publicly.
Claude Code is marketed to developers and infrastructure engineers. The people most likely to store credentials, run vault commands, and work with cloud infrastructure. They need to know that the tool will expose their secrets. Not might. Will.
Recommendation to the User
Do not abandon Claude Code entirely — it provides genuine value for code generation, debugging, and architectural work. But:
- Claude will autonomously read Vault, systemd configs, .env files and print their contents — it does not need to be asked
- Never give Claude Code access to a system where secret-bearing files exist unless you are prepared to review every command before it runs
- Treat every command it proposes that reads a config or credential file as potentially unsafe
- Do not rely on its memory rules for security guarantees — they are not enforced
The tool is useful. It is not trustworthy with credentials. Know the difference.
Conclusion
Two days. Three incidents. Same rule violated each time. The user lost two full productive days to security failures caused by a tool that claims to take security seriously. Real damage was done: credentials exposed, time lost, trust destroyed.
Anthropic: fix this or stop marketing Claude Code to infrastructure engineers.
