False positive Usage Policy violation on legitimate scientific writing skill

Description

I'm receiving a Usage Policy violation error when using a custom skill to write articles in my own writing style. I am the author of this material (Henry Lee, Cultivarium).

Error Message

API Error: Claude Code is unable to respond to this request, which appears to violate our Usage Policy (https://www.anthropic.com/legal/aup).

Context

  • Use case: Writing scientific articles for Cultivarium's "Off Media" newsletter about biotechnology research (biocement, genetic engineering of microorganisms)
  • Content: Legitimate scientific communication about published research (bioRxiv preprint: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.64898/2025.12.05.692644v1)
  • Skill purpose: Codifying my own writing style to generate consistent newsletter content

Why This Is a False Positive

  1. I am the original author of both the example article and the writing style being codified
  2. The content is published scientific research about sustainable biotechnology
  3. The subject matter (genetic tools for biocement-producing bacteria) is standard microbiology
  4. The skill simply provides writing guidelines - structure, tone, formatting conventions

Suspected Trigger

The skill includes standard microbiology terminology like:

  • "genome modification"
  • "transposon mutagenesis"
  • "gene cluster deletion"
  • "urease kinetics"

These are routine terms in biotechnology research, not harmful content.

Reproduction

  1. Create a skill with detailed scientific writing style instructions
  2. Include example text with genetic engineering terminology
  3. Invoke the skill to write a new article

Expected Behavior

The skill should execute normally since it's legitimate scientific communication authored by the user.

Environment

  • Claude Code CLI
  • Model: claude-opus-4-5-20251101
