Feature Request: Restore Automatic Conversation Summarization

Resolved 💬 2 comments Opened May 11, 2025 by mrtart02 Closed May 13, 2025

In previous versions of Claude, when conversations reached length limits, Claude would automatically summarize the conversation to allow it to continue. This feature was extremely useful for maintaining context in long sessions
without needing to start a completely new conversation.

The CLI version of Claude Code no longer offers this functionality, which significantly impacts usability for lengthy technical discussions. Without automatic summarization, users are forced to manually summarize or restart
conversations, losing valuable context and workflow momentum.

I would like to request that this automatic conversation summarization feature be restored to Claude Code CLI, as it was a highly valuable capability that differentiated Claude from other AI assistants.

Impact

  • Improves continuity of complex technical discussions
  • Reduces friction when working on multi-step programming tasks
  • Preserves important context without manual intervention

Thank you for considering this request.
