[BUG] Claude switches to English mid-session despite Japanese conversation and "language": "japanese" (Windows desktop app)

【報告】日本語で会話しているのに、Claude の返答や作業中の説明文が英語になる

■ 環境

• Claude デスクトップアプリ(Windows 11)の Code タブ(Claude Code)
• モデル: Claude Opus 5.5
• 発生日: 2026年10月13日〜14日(同じ会話の中で何度も)

■ 起きていること

• 利用者は最初から最後まで日本語で話しかけている。
• それなのに、Claude の返答、作業の合間の一言(「次に〜します」など)、コマンドの説明文が、たびたび英語になる。
• 利用者が「日本語で」と指摘すると、Claude は「申し訳ありません、日本語で書き直します」と日本語で答える。しかし数回のやりとりのあと、また英語に戻る。
• 長い作業(ブラウザの操作やコマンドの実行が何十回も続く場面)で特に多い。最後のまとめの返答がまるごと英語になったこともある。
• 指摘した回数は2日間で10回以上。

■ 試した対策(どれも完全には効かなかった)

1. 利用者の記憶ファイルに「返答は常に日本語で」と書いた。
2. settings.json に "language": "japanese" を設定した。
3. フック(hooks)で英語を検出する仕組みを入れた。

• PreToolUse: コマンドの説明文が英語なら止める。直前の一言が英語なら「日本語で書くこと」という注意を差し込む。
• Stop: 返答が英語なら終わらせずに書き直させる。
• フックは英語を正しく検出し、何度も注意を出している。それでも Claude は注意を受けた直後の一言を、また英語で書くことがあった。

1. 会話の記録(transcript)を見ても、英語の文がそのまま記録されていた。画面の表示の問題ではなく、Claude が実際に英語を書いている。

■ 影響

• 利用者には視覚障がいがあり、画面読み上げで内容を聞いている。英語の文が混ざると内容が分からず、作業の確認ができなくなる。

■ お願い

• 日本語の会話で、長い作業の途中に英語へ戻ってしまう原因を調べてほしい。
• "language" の設定や、フックからの注意が、もっと確実に守られるようにしてほしい。

Title: Claude switches to English mid-session even though the whole conversation is in Japanese

Environment

• When: Oct 13-14, 2026, repeatedly within the same session

What happens

• The user writes only in Japanese throughout.
• Claude's replies, its short progress notes between tool calls ("Next I'll ..."), and tool descriptions frequently come out in English.
• When the user says "please write in Japanese", Claude apologizes in Japanese and promises to continue in Japanese, but drifts back to English a few turns later.
• It happens most in long agentic stretches (dozens of browser actions / shell commands). Once the entire final summary of a task was in English.
• The user had to point this out 10+ times over two days.

What was tried (none fully worked)

1. A memory file instruction: "Always reply in Japanese".
2. "language": "japanese" in settings.json.
3. Hooks that detect English:

• PreToolUse: deny a tool call whose description has no Japanese; inject a reminder (additionalContext) when the previous assistant text was English.
• Stop: block and ask for a Japanese rewrite when the final reply is mostly English.
• The hooks detected English correctly and fired many times, yet Claude still wrote its very next progress note in English right after receiving the reminder.

1. The transcript itself contains the English text, so this is not a display issue: the model is actually writing English.

Impact

• The user is visually impaired and uses a screen reader. English text makes the content incomprehensible and blocks them from following the work.

Request

• Please investigate why Claude drifts back to English during long Japanese sessions.
• Please make the "language" setting and hook reminders more reliably respected.
