What happens

I run Claude Code with --ax-screen-reader. In this accessibility mode, the numbered AskUserQuestion list truncates each option line at about 300 characters and ends it with … +N more characters. There is no way to view the rest of the text: it is not printed anywhere and no key expands it. When options differ only in the hidden part, I cannot make an informed choice.

The cap applies to the whole line, label — description. In the example below, option 1 is 41 characters of label and separator plus 259 characters of description, which is 300 in total.

Expected

Accessibility mode should not truncate option text. --ax-screen-reader already replaces the visual interface with plain, linear text printed into scrollback, so there is no layout constraint that needs a cut, and the user has no way to see what was removed. Each option should be printed in full. If some limit is still needed, there should at least be a way to read the rest, such as a setting that raises the cap or a key that expands the option.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Start claude --ax-screen-reader.
  2. Have the model call AskUserQuestion with options whose label plus description is longer than 300 characters. For example, ask it to compare deployment strategies and write a full sentence or two for each option.
  3. Read the numbered list.

Environment

  • Claude Code 2.1.296
  • Started with --ax-screen-reader
  • Terminal: Windows Terminal, running Claude Code in WSL2 (Linux 6.18.40.1-microsoft-standard-WSL2)
  • Software I use alongside it: NVDA 2026.2. The truncation happens in Claude Code's own output, before any screen reader reads it.
