Problem

Account-synced skills are always written to ~/.claude/skills/synced/. There is no setting to change that location.

Users who keep one shared skills folder for several agents (the ~/.agents/skills layout from the Agent Skills standard, see #16345) link ~/.claude/skills to it, because ~/.claude/skills is the only user-level location Claude Code reads. The synced skills are then written into the shared folder, which every other agent also reads. A per-skill link is not a workable alternative when skills are created in the shared folder at any time.

The only control today is "syncClaudeAiSkills": false, which turns the feature off completely.

Proposal

A setting (for example syncClaudeAiSkillsDir, default ~/.claude/skills/synced) or an environment variable that sets where synced skills are written and read from. Claude Code would still load them from that directory.

Alternatives considered

  • syncClaudeAiSkills: false: loses the account skills in Claude Code.
  • Symlinking ~/.claude/skills/synced elsewhere: it stays inside the linked folder, and other agents follow the link.
  • Native ~/.agents/skills discovery (#16345) would remove the need for the link, but a separate sync location is still useful for anyone who links.

Environment

Claude Code 2.1.296, Linux.
