Desktop app: AskUserQuestion box steals the Enter key while I'm typing in the chat input — question answered unseen, message lost

Summary

In the Claude Code desktop app (Code tab, macOS), when Claude opens an AskUserQuestion box while I'm typing in the chat input, my next Enter keystroke answers or dismisses that question, which I never saw. My typed message is then lost, or sent as something random. This happens repeatedly, and it breaks the basic chat flow: I type and press Enter.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Start a long-running task in a Code session, so Claude works in the background and may ask a question.
  2. Start typing a new message in the chat input.
  3. Claude calls AskUserQuestion while you are typing.
  4. Press Enter to send your message.

Expected

  • A question box never takes keyboard focus away from a chat input that has text in it.
  • Enter in the chat input sends the chat message. It never answers or dismisses a question that appeared moments earlier.
  • The arrival of a question box is visible and audible, and it never silently replaces what I was typing.

Actual

  • Enter goes to the question box. The question is answered or dismissed, Claude sees "User dismissed — do not proceed" (or an unintended choice), and my message is lost.
  • I never see the question at all.

Impact

This makes me stop trusting the question tool, even though it is useful. As a workaround I added a PreToolUse hook on AskUserQuestion that plays a sound, shows a notification, and waits 2 seconds before the box opens. That should not be necessary.

Environment

  • Claude Code desktop app (Code tab), macOS
