Desktop app: setting to open file links in an external editor instead of the side pane

Clicking a file link in the Code tab always opens the in-app file pane. Would like a setting to send those clicks to my default editor (VS Code) instead. Right now I have to right-click → Open in → VS Code every time.
Either of these would work:
- A setting for what a plain click does (side pane or external editor)
- Cmd-click opens in the external editor, plain click stays as is
Same ask as #54027 and #73510. Both got closed without a fix (#54027 from inactivity).
