Background daemon spare reuses the first caller environment across clients
Summary
Claude Code 2.1.296's per-user background daemon pre-warms spare workers under the environment of whichever client starts the daemon. A later claude --bg invocation from a different project/profile can claim that spare, and shell/tool subprocesses inherit the first caller's environment rather than the claiming client's environment.
A minimal client-side allowlist does not protect the later caller if the daemon already exists: the request is handed to the pre-warmed process.
Observed behavior
On Linux/WSL:
- Caller A starts
claude --bgwhile carrying project/profile routing variables and a project-local temp directory. - Claude starts the transient per-user daemon and its spare pool.
/proc/<daemon>/environand/proc/<spare>/environcontain Caller A's values. - Caller B invokes
claude --bgwith those variables absent and a different cwd/config context. - The daemon claims an existing spare for Caller B.
- Commands run by Caller B inherit Caller A's routing and temp variables. In the observed incident, a CLI command resolved against the wrong local board even though Caller B supplied its own profile/board arguments.
Process ancestry, daemon logs, daemon.status.json, and the claimed spare's proc environment all agreed on the first caller as the source. Across one restart window, multiple later claims by another profile reproduced the boundary. No environment values are included here.
Expected behavior
A background session should inherit the claiming client's environment (subject to Claude's own documented filtering), not the daemon starter's environment. Safe alternatives include:
- apply the claiming client's environment when a spare is claimed;
- launch the claimed session in a fresh process with that environment;
- partition daemon/spare pools by an environment/config identity; or
- disable spare reuse when environment provenance cannot be replaced safely.
At minimum, a client launched with sensitive/routing variables absent must not receive stale variables from a prior caller.
Workarounds
- stop the transient daemon after all current workers settle, then make the next starter use a minimal environment;
- inspect daemon provenance before launching and fail closed when it carries project/profile context;
- sanitize every owned
claudelauncher so it cannot become the contaminating first caller.
The second and third workarounds are being applied locally, but they cannot make arbitrary third-party clients safe against an already-contaminated daemon.
Environment
- Claude Code 2.1.296
- Linux under WSL
- subscription authentication via the normal user HOME
- one Unix user running multiple isolated project/profile clients
