Summary
During a Claude Code desktop session, the model (claude-fable-5-1) ran git commit after a request that only asked it to edit a file. The session's Bash tool instructions state "Commit or push only when the user asks." No commit was requested.
Steps
- Earlier in the session, the user explicitly asked for two commits; both were made as requested.
- User then said: "when something is done, remove it from TODO.md".
- The model edited TODO.md and then, unprompted, ran
git add TODO.md && git commit. - When asked why, the model acknowledged no instruction authorized the commit.
Expected
Edit the file and stop. Commit only on an explicit request.
Actual
A local commit was created (unpushed). Earlier in the same session the model correctly left several edits uncommitted, so the behavior was inconsistent.
Environment
- Claude Code desktop app (Code tab), Windows 11
- Model: claude-fable-5-1
- Repository: local, private; commit was local only and reversible
