Preflight Checklist

  • [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
  • [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
  • [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code

What's Wrong?

The Claude desktop app (Code tab) freezes within 2–15 minutes of every launch. The main process stops writing to main.log, macOS spindump flags it as "spin" and then "hang", and the process ends with SIGKILL. No crash report is produced and the Crashpad folder is empty.

Seven of seven launches on one day ended this way. The previous build, 2.26454.0, ran for about 18 hours with no hang. The hangs began with the first launch of 2.26454.2.

In four of the seven cases the last main.log line before the freeze is "[Stop hook] Query completed for session ...", meaning a session had just finished a turn. The other three end on a preview server spawn, "[Preview MCP] javascript_tool timed out after 45000ms", and a transcript read.

One hang occurred about two minutes after launch.

What Should Happen?

The app stays responsive after a session turn completes.

Error Messages/Logs

Steps to Reproduce

Example timeline for one launch (local time, seconds relative to launch):
+0:00 app start, appVersion 2.26454.2
+1:26 last main.log line: [Stop hook] Query completed for session <id>
+2:00 spindump: Claude: spin: not sampling due to conditions 0x400000000
+2:07 spindump: Claude: hang: not sampling due to conditions 0x400000000
+2:10 runningboardd: termination reported by launchd (2, 9, 9) -> SIGKILL
Next launch logs: [updater] Previous run did not exit cleanly

Repeated before the hangs:
[CliGovernor] memory pressure (warning): evicted 0 of 0 idle session(s), 4 effective
[process-memory] app processes' footprint at or over installed memory ... highest sample 131% of installed memory

Additional Information

  • macOS 26.7.1 (25G241), Apple Silicon, 16 GB RAM.
  • This is the Claude desktop app (Code tab), not the CLI.
  • No crash report in ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports and Crashpad is empty; the process is hung, not faulting.
  • spindump declines to sample the hang ("not sampling due to conditions 0x400000000"), so no hang report is generated automatically.
  • No kernel memory-kill records for the app. One "low swap: failed to create swapfile" was logged shortly before the first exit of the day.
  • System was under memory pressure throughout (compressor holding 5–7 GB), but one hang occurred about two minutes after a fresh launch.
  • Can provide a scrubbed main.log excerpt or a stack sample of the hung main process on request.
