[BUG] # Claude Code Desktop App: Windows Drive Not Mounted in Container
Preflight Checklist
- [x] I have searched existing issues and this hasn't been reported yet
- [x] This is a single bug report (please file separate reports for different bugs)
- [x] I am using the latest version of Claude Code
What's Wrong?
Claude Code Desktop App: Windows Drive Not Mounted in Container
Environment
- OS: Windows 10 (Build 10.0.26200)
- Claude Code Version: 2.19675.1
- Install Type: MSIX (current-user)
- Container OS: Linux (kernel 6.18.44-fc-v77)
Problem
Claude Code runs in a containerized Linux environment with no mount for the host Windows file system. The user cannot access C:\code or any local Windows directories from within the IDE.
Expected
Windows C: drive (or at minimum, user's project directories) should be accessible within the Claude Code container, similar to how WSL2 mounts Windows drives at /mnt/c/.
Actual
- All file I/O is confined to
/home/user/Corinnewithin the container - No
/mnt/c/mount exists - No Windows drive accessible from any session (desktop or web version)
Reproduction
- Install Claude Code on Windows (MSIX)
- Launch the app
- Attempt to access local Windows files (e.g.,
C:\code) - Files are not accessible; no error, just no results
Impact
Blocker - Application is unusable for local development. User has active annual subscription but cannot develop against local files.
Investigation Notes
- Issue persists across:
- Desktop app restart
- Full system reboot
- Clean uninstall + reinstall (including cleanup of
AppData\Local\Packages\Claude_*) - Original MSIX installation failed with
HRESULT 0x80073CF6, retry succeeded but mounting never worked - Web version (claude.ai/code) also shows "Can't reach your computer"
Request
Fix containerized environment to mount Windows file system, or provide configuration to enable local drive access.
What Should Happen?
Expected
Windows C: drive (or at minimum, user's project directories) should be accessible within the Claude Code container, similar to how WSL2 mounts Windows drives at /mnt/c/.
Error Messages/Logs
## Error Codes & Messages
- **MSIX Installation**: `HRESULT 0x80073CF6` (AddPackage failed)
- **GitHub Triage Bot**: Action timeout after 5m 11s
- **Web App**: "Can't reach your computer"
## Log Locations (Windows)
Claude Code logs are typically at:
- `%APPDATA%\Anthropic\Claude\logs`
- Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application (filter for Claude)
## Next Steps for Anthropic
1. Check containerization config for volume mount setup
2. Verify MSIX package includes drive-mounting capability
3. Review triage bot timeout (may be unrelated infrastructure issue)
Steps to Reproduce
Steps to Reproduce
- Clean Install
- Uninstall Claude Code completely from Windows
- Delete
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Packages\Claude_* - Delete
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\anthropicclaude\ - Restart Windows
- Reinstall
- Download latest Claude Code installer
- Install as current user (MSIX package)
- Wait for installation to complete
- Launch & Test
- Open Claude Code
- Open terminal/file explorer in the IDE
- Try to navigate to
C:\codeor any local Windows directory - Attempt
ls C:\or file operations in bash
- Verify Failure
- Confirm files are not accessible
- Check current working directory: shows
/home/user/Corinne(Linux container path) - Run
ls /mnt/c/— returns "No such file or directory"
Expected Result
User can access and edit files in C:\code and other Windows directories through Claude Code IDE.
Actual Result
- All file access limited to
/home/user/Corinne - No Windows drive mounted in container
- Cannot create, edit, or access local Windows files
Claude Model
Not sure / Multiple models
Is this a regression?
Yes, this worked in a previous version
Last Working Version
Not sure but it was working in the latest version. I don't know if it's related, but it happened around the time that I opened my project in Chrome to continue working there so I could use some of the $100 credit I got for online use.
Claude Code Version
Configured for: Claude Opus 5.5 Actually running: Claude Haiku 4.5 (claude-haiku-4-5-20251001) You're set up on Opus but the runtime fell back to Haiku - probably due to quota/availability. The session ID is session_01KoXyWVXtVhoMCYuNvQ9bhV if you need it for anything.

Additional Information
Timeline
- Issue first noticed after attempting to use claude.ai/code (web version)
- Web version also unable to access local files ("Can't reach your computer")
- Desktop MSIX version: 2.19675.1
- No recent manual updates recalled, but automatic updates may have occurred
According to Claude -"The drive mounting issue is almost certainly an MSIX/containerization problem on the desktop app."
BTW - not using a terminal to code, using the Claude desktop app.
